Step One: The Shedding Test

This is the most frustrating surprise. A hat that literally falls apart after a few wears.

- Under $25 for natural straw → almost certainly low-grade or synthetic

- $25–$50 → decent paper straw or basic natural straw

- $50–$100 → good quality raffia, Toyo, or entry-level Panama

- Over $100 → genuine Panama or high-end natural straw

Step Five: Your Pre-Purchase Checklist

Before you click "buy," run through these five checks.

- Light test: Hold the hat up to a light source. Can you see through it? If yes, it offers little sun protection.

- Structure check: Look for "structured brim" or "wire brim" in the description. If not mentioned, assume it is floppy.

- Material check: What is it made of? Toquilla, raffia, Toyo, or paper? "Straw" alone is not enough.

- Review scan: Search reviews for "falling apart," "shedding," "sagging," "floppy," and "transparent." Multiple complaints = skip it.

- Price sanity: If the price seems too low for the material type, it probably is.
